Land Use/Cover Changes in North Eastern Greece from 1980 to 2000

چکیده
Routes of transhumance movement as well as both summer and winter destinations are subjected to intense grazing that over the years may shape landscapes. The aim of this study was to investigate land use changes in Aspropotamos area, Trikala from 1985 to 2000 that serves as a summer destination of transhumance flocks. Changes in land cover were explored with the post classification comparison approach within a GIS environment. Two maps of 1985 and 2000 were used. The results of the current paper reveal a dramatic reduction of shrubland (up to 100%) followed by grazed open forest (17.61 %) and grasslands (13.77%), while the higher percentage of increase was recorded in the forest (32.7%) followed by agricultural land (24.88%). It seems that the declining trend of transhumance grazing in mountainous areas in Greece account for both changes in rangelands and forest areas. In conclusion, transhumance serves as a critical element towards maintaining ecosystem productivity to its recent historical equilibria.

Extended abstract 1- Introduction Land use reflects the interactive characteristics of humans and the environment and describes how human exploitation works for one or more targets on the ground. Land use is usually defined based on human use of the land, with an emphasis on the functional role of land in economic activities. Land use, which is associated with human activity, is changing over...

Analyzing the process of land use and cover changes during long periods of time and predicting the future changes is highly important and useful for the land use managers. In this study, the land use maps in the Ardabil plain in north-west part of Iran for four periods (1989, 1998, 2009 and 2013) are extracted and analyzed through remote sensing technique, using the land-sat satellite images. T...

This study analyzes the characteristics of land use/land cover change in Jordan’s Irbid governorate, 1984–2018, and predicts future land use/land cover for 2030 and 2050 using a cellular automata-Markov model. The results inform planners and decision makers of past and current spatial dynamics of land use/land cover change and predicted urban expansion, for a better understanding and successful...
متن کاملLand Use/Cover Dynamics in Response to Changes in Environmental and Socio-Political Forces in the Upper Reaches of the Yangtze River, China
Land use/cover change (LUCC), which results from the complex interaction of social, ecological and geophysical processes, is a major issue and the main cause of global environmental change. This study analyzed the land use/cover dynamics and their environmental and socio-political forces in the upper reaches of Yangtze River from 1980 to 2000 by using remote sensing, climatic and socio-economic...
متن کاملChanges in Spatiotemporal Land Use Patterns in Selected Hydrogeomorphic Areas of China and the USA
Differences exist in land use/cover pattern and its change between the P. R. China and the USA. In order to describe those differences, land use changes in representative regions were quantitatively analyzed and compared. Xiamen City, Changzhutan region and Liupan Mountains regions were selected to represent three different hydrogeomorphic areas of eastern, central, and western China, respectiv...
